Sherman crossing the Tennessee at Chattanooga on their return from Knoxville -- The arduous duties lately performed by the corps fighting & marching, that on their return from Knoxville the men were in a wretched condition. The majority being without overcoats & a great many barefoot on a bitter cold day. They marched into Chattanooga and crossed the river, apparently in fine spirits, not a murmur being heard, although a fatiguing march of 70 miles, over a rough mountain road was yet before them, before reaching Bridgeport where they could attain sufficient clothing to shelter them from the blasts of winter."
