Recto: "The Crossing of the Rappahanock. // Midnight. // Section A. // No. 2. // This old tree is full of small branches the principal limbs are exact. // Moon. // The distance dim & silvery, just about the effect as indicated, the top of hills and trees a little darker than sky, the rest the same tint. // The night calm lurid smoke rising in this outline a little fire is rising from the ruins below. // Do do [?] // The pontoons are regular distance apart. // Two pontoon bridges close together, nearest one for artillery & cavalry, farther one for infantry, put your effect here, by managing the figures bridge and pontoons with brilliant blacks and whites, in distinct outlines and brilliant reflections. // Used."
