Recto: "Harpers published the best photograph of Rosecrans, get that, make the beard and hair light all published ones are too dark. Rosecrans is very fair, I give you R's dress exactly, common blue overcoat. 2 lower buttons fast, the rest flying open, showing the dark undercoat and the 2 rows of 3 cluster buttons [small sketch] slouched hat, give expression as cool and unconcerned as possible. His staff officers are between the guns, shouting and waving their hands for him to come back. I think you can make a splendid historical picture of this, do your best. Put R more in the center of the picture the ground is rising and in a slumpy field, be sure and make a tip-top portrait. // The Bravest of the Brave. // Gen Rosecrans reconnoitering under the guns of the Stokes Battery (Chicago Board of Trade Battery) Battle of Stone River."
