Regiment having been ordered by the Col. to cross the river & ascertain the location of a rebel camp proceeded with nine men to a point about 3/4 of a mile from the banks of the the Potomac, when, having just crossed a run, he was startled by the hoarse shout of the word of command 'fire!' followed by a volley from about 40 muskets at but a few feet distance. The captain ordered the men to fall but they returned the fire. Upon the smoke clearing away the enemy had disappeared. Capt. S. finding the object of the expedition frustrated recrossed the Potomac to camp. 3 men wounded, 2 missing. // This is a moon."
