Verso: "the two Divisions of Crooks charged Brigade front consequently there was two battle lines Col Wells was the advance Brigade of Thoburns Div and was the first to enter the works - Col wells [sic] reg't was [canceled: the first to] the 34 Mass Vols led the way (see point whe[re] the flag is visible) please indicate this both in the Cut & description - the Col (Wells) is very kind to me - & I think 'twill' be to our advantage to particularize him. he [sic] is in Com'd of a brigade & a gallant officer // [signed] Taylor // Averell Cavalry sept from right to left the rear of the infantries the hills on the extreme [illeg.] the pictu[re]."
