Recto: "Battle of Grand Coteau La // Capture of the 67th Indiana Rgt. Lt. Col. Buehler // Nov. 3rd 1863 // The two guns in the distances is a section of Sims' Battery under command of Lieut. Marlin, shelling the rebels in the woods, on our right. A ravine is between them and us. // The two guns above are rifled Parrotts, under command of Capt. Rice 17th Ohio Battery."
Verso: "The 67th Indiana were surrounded by mounted infantry a Texas Regiment 800 strong, and captured. Gen. Burbridge ordered Col. Buehler ten times to fall back under cover of 17th Ohio battery - but for some reason did not obey. Gen. Burbridge dismounted at one time and took charge of one of the pieces and discharged canister and grape into the ranks of the enemy producing great havoc, but owing to the disobedience of Col. Buehler had to fall back to save the battery, the enemy meanwhile had nearly surrounded them. One of the pieces was subsequently lost. The Texans had no sabres - the rifles were discharged, and had the men of the 67th been properly handled they could have escaped. // [signed] C.E.H. Bonwill."
