Verso: "Frederick, Md- July 1863- 7th Regt., N.Y.S.M // Frank Leslie Esq.- Dr. Sir, // The enclosed sketch of our camp may be useful to you if so you are quite welcome to it. // The fine farm house & barn on the left are the Smith grounds made memorable as the place where Gen. Hooker so recently resigned his command and transferred it to General Meade. // With the rails from a neighboring fence and a few sheaves of wheat straw we have extemporized a snug camp and are quite comfortable in spite of the rainstorm which has prevailed constantly- Across the wheat field in our rear hangs Wm Richardson a rebel spy, who was arrested with plans and information of the utmost importance to Gen. Lee- he is known throughout the Army as a peddler of books, songs & lithographs- let such ever be the fate of traitors! - The different corps of the grand Army of the Potomac are now passing to the defeat of Lee- flushed with victory- // Yours very truly - John Avery, Jr. 7th Co., 7th Regt., N.Y.S.M."
