Recto: [captions keyed to marks in drawing] "T Rebel gunboats // X Gunboats commencing bombardment of Fort Bartow // O Marsh Light House // Schr Sea Bird with Capt. Fields' floating bridge // Passage of the fleet of transports through 'the marshes' onto Croatan Sound. The channel through the marshes connects Pamlico & Roanoke Sounds. On the right are seen the densely wooded shores of Roanoke Island with in the distance the fleet of gunboats engaging the first of the rebel batteries, Fort Bartow -- 9 guns."

Vertical and horizontal folds; two pieces of paper glued together with a third strip; loss of paper and ripping along right margin; hole at upper mid-right; glue stains on verso; one at upper left on recto.
