Verso: "Soldiers at work on the fortifications in Vicksburg. Scene on Crawford St. Head Quarters 17th Army Corps. // (Private) - A new line of fortifications now in course of construction here & nearby completed - at present contraband - but the small piece shown in the sketch will not materially affect the business - [signed] F.B.S. // P.S. This shows the manner of constructing this works - a wood work revetment with the earth thrown up in front-."

Vertical and horizontal folds; uneven paper at bottom margin; rips near lower left corner and on right margin; splash stain at upper left; glue stains on upper margin.
